This guy is looking for a hook to get more media play.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama issued a pointed warning yesterday to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, saying that as president he would be prepared to order U.S. troops into that country unilaterally if it failed to act on its own against Islamic extremists.

In his most comprehensive statement on terrorism, the senator from Illinois said that the Iraq war has left the United States less safe than it was before the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and that if elected he would seek to withdraw U.S. troops and shift the country's military focus to threats in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

I have no problem with his proposed military shift but his reasoning is ludicrous when he makes the statement there are terrorist hole up in the mountains that killed 3000 of our people on 9/11.
I'm sure that 29 or 36 % of the US people who now believe 9/11 was an internal act of terrorism must shake their heads at these comments.
And on a serious note this just what Mashariff needs in an already fragile goverment to be weakened in his already anti US sentiment.

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri on Thursday termed US presidential candidate Barack Obama’s statement on attacking Al Qaeda targets in Pakistan “irresponsible”, and said that point-scoring in the US elections at Pakistan’s cost would be detrimental to the interests of Pakistan and USA.

About the legislation on the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, Kasuri said that in some ways “the current legislation HR 1(Implementation of the 9/11 Commission’s Recommendations) is even more counter-productive than the Pressler Amendment”.

Kasuri said the Pressler Amendment was aimed at preventing Pakistan from becoming a nuclear power, while Pakistan felt that acquiring strategic capability was in its interest following India’s nuclear test. “Ironically the new legislation is telling Pakistan to do what Pakistan is doing any way – trying to combat extremism and terrorism – and it is doing so because it is in Pakistan’s own national interest.”

State Minister for Information Tariq Azeem accused Obama of “sheer ignorance” for threatening to launch US military strikes against Al Qaeda on Pakistani soil.

“Such statements are being made out of sheer ignorance,” Azeem told AFP. “They are not fully apprised about the ground realities and not aware of the efforts by Pakistan.

“We have said before that we will not allow anyone to infringe our sovereignty,” Azeem added. “If there is any actionable intelligence they should tell us and only our forces will take action on it and they are quite capable of it.”

The minister suggested that Obama’s comments were prompted by Washington’s inability to curb the ongoing Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan. “This seems to be a reaction to their own failure in Afghanistan to control the US casualties and instead of addressing the situation there, they are finding scapegoats and damaging their own cause,” Azeem added.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam on Wednesday warned against “point-scoring” by US presidential candidates on vital security issues.

Balochistan Governor Owais Ghani said the talk by US officials and Obama on striking against Al Qaeda targets in Pakistani territory undermine Pakistan’s fight against militants. “It sends a very bad signal to our public back home and they become very agitated over it and that puts pressure on the government and I think it doesn’t help,” he said in Washington. agencies

I went into more detail in my Blog entry, but I will say --this from the guy who would not have voted for war. He is making rookie mistakes, his people spend all their time on defense instead of offense. It will not go well.

Not just Obama, but all candidates are being told to shut up on foreign policy. I cannot recall that ever being done lately.

The State Department has a message for White House candidates wanting to expound on sensitive diplomatic issues: Shut up.

Traditionally silent during presidential campaigns filled with divisive foreign policy debates, the department on Friday delivered a rebuke to would-be nominees of both parties whose recent comments have complicated U.S. efforts to overcome deep suspicion about the war on terrorism in the Muslim world.

"Those who wish to hold office can speak for themselves and whoever is elected in 2008 and comes into office in 2009 will then be in a position to talk about what they intend or plan to do," said deputy spokesman Tom Casey, a career foreign service officer.

Their wisdom for becoming a good leader has been distablized with rhetoric that is suppose to show strength catering to those that voted Bush in to power.
Where are those intelligent candidates who's strength comes from diplomacy and wisdom rather then stupid macho comments catering to rednecks.

I agree and since Reagan, the US aggressive foreign policy has been that of a cowboy riding into indian country and stealing everything in sight. Unfortunately the American people seem to believe it is their right to do as they see fit in other countries and those that do not agree, become the enemy.

I cannot remember an election where the admin tells candidates to shut up on foreign policy, but then if it was gonna be anybody, it was gonna be the Bush Boyz.
